General Information

When learning to drive in Great Britain or Northern Ireland, it is important to have a provisional driving licence. You must also be supervised by a driving instructor or someone who meets the requirements, such as family or friends. The car you use for learning must display ‘L’ plates. You are allowed to drive at any time of the day or night, but you can only drive on motorways if you are in England, Scotland, or Wales, with an approved driving instructor, and if the car is fitted with dual controls. These rules are in place to ensure that you are safe on the roads while learning to drive. It is important to follow these rules and take the necessary precautions to avoid any accidents or mishaps.

Taking driving lessons

If you're looking for someone to teach you how to drive, it's important to choose an instructor who is either a qualified and approved driving instructor (ADI) or a trainee driving instructor. In Northern Ireland, there are different rules for selecting an instructor. Keep in mind that instructors can set their own prices for driving lessons and there is no minimum or maximum cost. It's important to do your research and find an instructor who is knowledgeable, patient, and able to help you feel comfortable behind the wheel. With the right instructor by your side, you can gain the skills and confidence you need to become a safe and responsible driver.

New Drivers

If you accumulate six or more points within two years of passing your driving exam, your licence will be revoked. Furthermore, any penalty points on your provisional licence that have not yet expired will be conveyed to your full licence upon passing your test. If you add any further penalty points on top of these, which bring your total to six or more within two years of passing your driving test, your license will be cancelled. Therefore, it is essential to drive safely and avoid collecting penalty points to maintain your driving licence.

If your licence is cancelled within 2 years you’ll have to apply and pay for a new provisional licence and pass both theory and practical parts of the driving or riding test again to get a full licence. If you have not sent off for your full licence you must retake both parts of your driving test if your licence has been cancelled after you’ve passed your test, but you have not sent off for your full licence yet. You can use your current provisional licence to take the tests.

In the UK, it is against the law for anyone other than Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) or licensed instructors in training to offer driving lessons for payment. To determine whether an instructor is fully qualified and approved, look for a green octagonal badge displayed within the tuition vehicle. A pink triangular badge indicates that the instructor is still in the process of becoming fully qualified. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) closely monitors the quality of instruction provided by ADIs and assigns grades accordingly. A Grade 4 grade denotes competence while a Grade 6 suggests a very high standard. Therefore, when searching for a driving instructor, be sure to verify their qualifications before paying for any lessons.
